WHY IS THE HOLY SPIRIT SO IMPORTANT?
John 14:26
I. WE ARE TOTALLY DEPENDENT ON HIM
1. We are dependent on the Holy Spirit for our own salvation and the salvation of others. “But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:4-5).
2. When the Holy Spirit is allowed entrance into our lives the moment we accept Jesus, the Holy Spirit can do for a defeated life what we could never do.
3. Not only are we dependent on the Holy Spirit for salvation we continue to be dependent on him for our growth as Christians.
4. We are dependent on the Holy Spirit for our understanding of the Bible’s message.
5. Without the work of the Holy Spirit, we become like those whom Jesus described as having ears yet not hearing.
6. We are dependent on the Holy Spirit for the ability to lead others to Christ.
7. The Holy Spirit will help us even when we are brought before the authorities because of our faith. “At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you” (Matt. 10:19-20).
8. We are dependent on the Holy Spirit for effective prayer (Romans 8:26).
II. GOD HAS SAID MUCH ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT
1. The Holy Spirit is mentioned 378 times in the Old Testament. In the New Testament he is mentioned 335 times. Certainly a total of 713 references to the Holy Spirit in God’s Word will convince us of the importance of the Holy Spirit in all of our lives.
III. TODAY’S PROBLEMS CANNOT BE SOLVED WITHOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT
1. If the Holy Spirit was taken out of this world, there would be no sense of right and wrong, no conscience, no sorrow for evil done, and no force to hold back Satan’s power.
